The weakness of the Asia-Europe trade is being felt in Singapore, where container turnover fell, for the first time since 2009, to a four-year low. Throughput fell 8.7% last year over the previous year as shipping alliances impacted volumes and routes, as well as direct sailings, due to cheaper fuel prices, making Sinagpore a less attractive hub. It being Singapore, however, don’t expect it to sit around and wait for volumes to return. The proactive country is offering concessions and deals to get its traffic back.
