As the fate of Manston Airport in Kent is decided, the UK’s Daily Telegraph has published a series of photographs of abandoned airports. From a park at Berlin Templehof, via New York, Athens, Nicosia and Johnston Atoll, with possibly the worst waste of money revealed in Spain, where a sculpture – of a now-imprisoned politician – marks the folly of this white elephant.

June 02, 2014 at 9:01 pmCertainly plenty of examples to go around. MidAmerica Airport, near St. Louis has been a tremendous waste of public money that shockingly continues to be protected and encouraged by some combination of stupidity and cronyism of local elected officials.
Of course, in the early days of what has become the Aerotropolis fad of airport development, its champions not only managed to waste a couple of hundred million dollars on the Global TransPark in North Carolina but also projected that U-Tapao Airport in Thailand would anchor the global network of aerotropoli (?) Some days it seems like PT Barnum was an optimist.
