The latest development of China’s One Belt, One Road initiative, according to this report from The Independent, is to look north to the Arctic and develop new routes between Asia and Europe via the north as reduced ice floes make the journey increasingly easier. The primary objective is securing routes for LNG imports, although other cargo routes are likely to follow. The issue for other Arctic nations – a club that China is not a member of, although it has been granted observer status – is its military intentions.
