After more than two decades of work, US investigators are set to drop a case into America’s largest truckers union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, after concluding that “the union has made significant strides to cut ties with organised crime”. The union has faced racketeering charges since 1988, when it found itself caught up in then prosecutor Rudi Giuliani’s anti-corruption drive that would see him later voted in as New York mayor. The union has 1.4m members, and was infamously led by Jimmy Hoffa, during the 1950s and 1960s, who spent time in jail for fraud and jury-tampering, and disappeared in 1975, rumoured to have been murdered by the mob.
