Look at what self-service tools are available for passengers and travel agents; e-tickets – instant and guaranteed price quotes, live schedules, live departure and arrival times, online routing and connection guides, space availability across the globe. A similar solution in one interface for air cargo simply does not exist. Shippers demand the same tools for air cargo – more transparency-more instant and guaranteed price quotes, e-based documents, e-trading etc. etc. – Years ago I fully expected GF-X to supply the answer- i.e. establish a GDS type solution for Cargo. Sadly it has been a dismal failure by all accounts. Other solutions exist (Unisys CPS, Easy cargo etc. – but they are all hopelessly incomplete and inadequate.
Combination carriers will continue to lose out to the integrators who can at least offer a seamless end to end solution at a very high price. Combi carriers will be left with the crumbs.
