Real-time information, instant pricing and innovative solutions which reduce shippers’ costs would generate more airfreight and better justify its expense, according to shippers at yesterday’s Nordic Air Cargo Symposium in Stockholm.
Robert Mellin, head of distribution logistics at Ericsson, said that with more information, reliability and visibility, it was possible to build better logistics models, potentially eliminating costs for all parties while also satisfying increasing demands for sustainability information from customers.

April 14, 2014 at 8:46 amVery interesting comments by the shippers here and proof once again that air cargo is not so radically different from the passenger business after all.
Look at what self-service tools are available for passengers and travel agents; e-tickets – instant and guaranteed price quotes, live schedules, live departure and arrival times, online routing and connection guides, space availability across the globe. A similar solution in one interface for air cargo simply does not exist. Shippers demand the same tools for air cargo – more transparency-more instant and guaranteed price quotes, e-based documents, e-trading etc. etc. – Years ago I fully expected GF-X to supply the answer- i.e. establish a GDS type solution for Cargo. Sadly it has been a dismal failure by all accounts. Other solutions exist (Unisys CPS, Easy cargo etc. – but they are all hopelessly incomplete and inadequate.
Combination carriers will continue to lose out to the integrators who can at least offer a seamless end to end solution at a very high price. Combi carriers will be left with the crumbs.
