There’s been much talk of trade protectionism lately, especially in air freight. This may not be a tit-for-tat trade duty which is being levied, but the US military, which spends a fair amount on training shoes, is considering buying only US-made ‘sneakers’. The 1941 Berry Amendment states that the DoD must buy boots and uniforms which are 100%-US made – but trainers were exempted. Now, however, following lobbying from the US shoe industry, it looks as if the waiver might be lifted, forcing American feet into American shoes. Just in case there is ever “an altercation with the Chinese” – presumably resulting in sock-footed US troops.
