Aside from the mis-use of the word ‘shipper’, this gives an interesting insight into how important the US food aid programme – which politicians want to cut – is to the maritime industry. In 2010 food aid supported 13,000 jobs and saw more than 2 million tons of food shipped – on US-registered ships – around the world. This year however, the aid budget is being cut and America’s sea freight sector is worried.
