If you thought 3D-printing was a futuristic way of cutting down the supply chain, try this for size. The Hyperloop has emerged as a possible fifth transport mode. Using a network of pneumatic steel tubes between major cities, capsules could travel at speeds of over 700mph, dramatically cutting down transport time. A group of engineers are already working to turn the idea into reality, starting in California. The question, of course, is what the cost and capacity would be – the vast majority of shippers don’t seem too concerned right now over the speed at which their shipments travel, so long as it’s cheap.
