Quite a few of our readers picked up the story we linked to recently about the penniless Australian athlete Reg Spiers who, having no money left while in the UK in the 1960s, posted himself home in a crate cash-on-delivery. The BBC recently followed it up with the more sobering story of a Welshman stranded in Australia who did the return journey after reading about Mr Spiers’ exploits, but came harrowingly close to death.
