The latest research on the benefits and drawbacks of slow steaming for lines, customers and the environment has a mixed conclusion – carriers are certainly saving more money the slower they sail; shippers benefit up to a point, but slower than certain speed – down to 15 knots, say – and the extra inventory costs are far higher than the fuel savings. However, one benefit has been vastly increased schedule reliability across the liner industry, claim major shippers.
