The Economist has published an interesting article on Mexican competitiveness, looking at the maquiladoras – special factories which are granted tax breaks. While the government, in its quest to improve public services, is looking to end those breaks, Mexican entrepreneurs are hoping to profit from rising costs in China and their proximity to the US market to boost trade. However, drawbacks include a lack of skilled engineers and a lack of local suppliers.
