Boeing’s problems are not going to go away quickly, and they will further highlight the problems of flying lithium-ion batteries.
According to this interesting article from the Seattle Times, the 787 is the first aircraft to put the batteries to full use to help save weight. However, when the same was done in the electric car market, several cars caught fire during crash-testing, as the result of a battery-coolant leak. While fire-fighting on that front, Boeing is also facing compensation claims from affected airlines – and no doubt will be negotiating hard behind the scenes with the offer of cut-price new aircraft.
