With frozen ‘beef-based’ products being removed from shelves across the UK, questions are being raised over a lack of transparency in Europe’s food supply chain. Is globalisation having a negative effect? As outsourcing to low-cost economies increases, national regulatory authorities are losing the quality control battle.

The latest twist comes at the expense of UK-based company Findus, whose ‘beef’ products have been found to contain up to 100% horse meat, while last year ABP Food Group, one of the largest distributors involved in the ‘Horse-gate saga’, alone imported 170 tonnes of ‘beef’ from an unnamed Polish supplier and is now suffering the effects of supply chain mismanagement.
