Two tales of Amazon, today. One is that the e-commerce behemoth is to set up a pilot scheme offering third-party logistics services in India for itself and other sellers. Amazon received government approval to set up the scheme in February, and launched its online marketplace in India in June. It is panning to hire 13,500 staff n Hyderabad. Over in Germany, however, things aren’t looking quite so bright as its logistics centres in Leipzig and Bad Hersfeld were hit yesterday by strikes. The Verdi union is asking for a collective bargaining agreement with higher wages and better working conditions. But Amazon’s Germany logistics chief said he wouldn’t be “blackmailed [by an organisation that] threatens to ruin Christmas for German children”. The race is clearly on to reach the moral high ground.
