India’s low-cost carrier SpiceJet is considering acquiring freighters, according to the country’s Business Standard newspaper. While last month the carrier, which has hopes of picking up e-commerce business through its network, indicated it may use its passenger aircraft at night to carry cargo, it says now it is considering “a lot of ideas”.
While this market looks set – at some point – to be highly competitive, new freight services have found it difficult to launch. ASL’s Quikjet still does not appear to have restarted services since it suspended operations in 2013, while Jet Airways recently decided to postpone its plan to operate freighters. Blue Dart continues to rule the roost in India’s domestic air cargo sector.
