With contract negotiations between the express and freight giant and their pilots union now having entered a fifth – yep, FIFTH – year, it would appear that union officials have given up on the company meeting their requests on healthcare and pensions. Timing is also important of course, given that the US is about to enter its peak shipping season and shippers are nervous about capacity. The union has applied to the Federal Mediation Board to release it from mediation which, if granted, will allow to begin a 30-yday countdown to strike action.
