The Book & Claim solution enables e-commerce and logistics partners to reduce emissions from air transport actively and report verified climate impact.
Spring GDS, a global leader in cross-border logistics, has announced the launch of its Book & Claim solution for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a new initiative designed to reduce emissions from air transport and help customers meet their sustainability goals with verified, transparent reporting.
This announcement marks the company’s next major step toward achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040, building on the success of its HVO100 biofuel initiative, which has already reduced road transport emissions by up to 90%.
Air transport currently accounts for around 2.5% of global emissions, a figure that could rise to 22% by 2050 without intervention. Through its new SAF Book & Claim model, Spring GDS offers customers the opportunity to decarbonise their air shipments without needing direct access to the fuel itself.
Sustainable fuel for a new logistics era
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a next-generation jet fuel produced from renewable waste materials such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and agricultural residues. Unlike fossil-based kerosene, SAF reduces lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 80%, enabling immediate climate benefits with no change to existing aircraft or fuelling systems.
Spring GDS has secured a significant amount of SAF, ensuring verified emission reduction attributes for its customers. Through the Book & Claim mechanism, businesses can choose the share of SAF they wish to associate with their air transport, effectively reducing emissions at the source, even where SAF is not physically available.
Each transaction is independently certified under ISCC standards and recorded on the fuel supplier’s blockchain platform to guarantee transparency and prevent double counting. Customers receive verified reports aligned with global standards such as the GHG Protocol.
A smarter model for measurable decarbonisation
The Book & Claim model is a breakthrough approach for logistics sustainability. By decoupling the physical fuel from the administrative claim of its environmental benefits, it allows wider participation in emission reduction — even in markets where SAF supply is limited.
Spring GDS manages the end-to-end process: sourcing and purchasing SAF from certified suppliers, allocating verified emission reductions to customer shipments, and providing full documentation for ESG and Scope 3 disclosures.
This approach represents a shift from traditional carbon offsetting to insetting, reducing emissions within the logistics value chain itself.
“Decarbonizing logistics requires partnership, innovation, and accountability,” said Tatum Bross, Project Manager ESG at Spring GDS. “Our Book & Claim solution empowers customers to take direct action on their air transport emissions with measurable results, full traceability, and verified climate impact. Offsetting is no longer enough. True climate progress happens when we decarbonise at the source.”
From road to sky: expanding a proven sustainability strategy
Spring GDS’s Book & Claim solution builds on its proven track record in sustainable logistics. The company’s HVO100 biofuel initiative has already reduced road emissions across Europe by up to 90%. Now, the same philosophy is being extended to the aviation sector.
By combining ground and air sustainability programs, Spring GDS provides a comprehensive, end-to-end decarbonisation framework for e-commerce and global delivery networks.
