Garment workers in Bangladesh have forced factories to suspend production as they protest about their wages. In clashes with police which turned violent, thousands of workers have been calling for a rise in the minimum wage to about $100 a month, more than double its current level. Some 500 factories have closed. More than four million people work in Bangladesh’s apparel industry, which saw exports of $20bn last year.
