The US airline industry is not pleased. But there is a plan afoot in the US to use an airport security fee increase to pay for highway and rail transit projects. Forged by Republicans in the House of Representatives, the $8.1bn plan will boost the Highway Trust Fund until the end of the year, ensuring continuation in road construction projects. Congress has a deadline of July 31 to renew federal transport spending. A fuel tax increase has been ruled out but higher TSA fees could bridge the funding gap. Airlines For America has, not surprisingly, objected.
