Gianluigi Aponte, founder of the world’s largest container line, MSC, has handed over control of the business to his daughter, group CFO Alexa, and son and MSC president Diego.
This morning, MSC announced the move, which had been preceded by a transfer of ownership in the final quarter of 2025.
Mr Aponte commented: “I am incredibly proud of this historic moment. Passing ownership to my children is not only a reflection of their dedication and achievements, but also a continuation of our family’s centuries-long maritime heritage.
“With Diego and Alexa, I am confident the group will continue to thrive and honour our family’s legacy of innovation, resilience and unwavering commitment to the sea.”
No mention was made of the current chief executive, Soren Toft, in post since 2020 who kicked off the spending spree on second-hand ships that allowed the Swiss-based carrier to usurp Maersk in 2022 and become the world’s largest box line.
Mr Aponte will remain invested in the carrier, serving as executive chair of MSC Group.
