Report card on where shipping is, in respect to sustainability and reducing fossil fuel consumption, using Maersk’s basket of initiatives as a guide. It might be building ships that use less fuel and slowing vessel speeds to use less fuel, but Maersk and the other lines are still burning filthy heavy fuel oil, and lots of it. While individual carriers’ CO2 output might be on the decrease, this piece argues there is more that can be done.
