DP World London Gateway new Quay Cranes

While ocean carriers performed well financially in Q2, judiciously keeping capacity tight by blanking hundreds of sailings to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, ports have had to contend with a significant drop in throughput across their container terminals.

Yesterday Maersk revealed that volumes at its gateway ports declined by 14% during the quarter.

Notwithstanding that it seems to have not been as badly affected as its rival by the downturn at its facilities during the pandemic DP World’s transition from a port operator to a self-styled global trade enabler appears to be a forward thinking strategy.
