While ocean carriers performed well financially in Q2, judiciously keeping capacity tight by blanking hundreds of sailings to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, ports have had to contend with a significant drop in throughput across their container terminals.
Yesterday Maersk revealed that volumes at its gateway ports declined by 14% during the quarter.
Notwithstanding that it seems to have not been as badly affected as its rival by the downturn at its facilities during the pandemic DP World’s transition from a port operator to a self-styled global trade enabler appears to be a forward thinking strategy.
