Kunming, capital of China’s south-west Yunnan province, is the country’s gateway to south-east Asia. A vast motorway building project has seen it connected with the major cities throughout the region, all the way to Singapore. Plans for a similar network to stretch west to India and Bangladesh have foundered however, until Indian and Chinese officials recently signed an agreement to build a road linking Kunming with Kolkata, thus giving China access to the Bay of Bengal. But where does this leave Bangladesh?
