The data is conflicting and often contradictory, but most experts are agreed on one thing: if the economic recovery is to be sustained, ultimately the Chinese consumer needs to get out his wallet. The trouble is, data on the Chinese shopper is notoriously unreliable, often including business investment and government procurement in its numbers. But while incomes continue to rise, the prognosis is surprisingly optimistic.
