The place most threatened by the development of China’s new Silk Road appears to be Singapore, according to this interesting analysis in Splash247. Reducing its reliance on accessing global markets through its ports is clearly a priority of the Chinese government, especially with regional tensions rising over the disputed ownership of the Spratly Islands. New land routes to Europe via rail, or even through the proposed Thai canal, have the potential to turn the Singapore Straits into a backwater. How will Singapore respond?
