The assistant editor of The Daily Telegraph tries to get to grips with the conflicting signals from the UK’s economic data and asks what role the Bank of England is actually trying to fulfil. His conclusions are far from satisfactory – the bank is at war with itself and the government; the government needs to do more to stimulate growth; and much of the current GDP data is “as useful as a chocolate teapot”.
