Further analysis of Delta Airlines’ decision to buy its own oil refinery. Given that it spent some $12bn on fuel last year, the $150m purchase price – along with another $100m to commission the plant – seems paltry in comparison, especially if it can generate the expected annual savings of $300m. But there is also a deeper story here about the external economics of scale.
