UPS is to buy some 6,000 natural gas-powered trucks as it looks to expand its use of alternative fuels. The vehicles, a $450m investment, will use compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems. UPS wants 25% of vehicles bought in 2020 to run on alternative fuels. “This goal was part of a broader sustainability commitment to reduce UPS’s carbon footprint,” said a spokesperson. “The 6000+ plan over the next three years will help us achieve that goal.” UPS acknowledged that customers were starting to request action on energy, to reduce the environmental impact of shipping goods, reports SupplyChain24/7.
