German 3PL Rhenus Group and Dutch port services provider LBH Group have announced plans to create a joint-venture company to run inland waterway transport operations across Europe.
“Both companies are seeking to set up a joint venture which aims to pool activities in the field of inland waterway shipping and the onward carriage of the associated goods,” the companies said in a joint statement.
According to Thomas Maassen, managing director of Rhenus Port Logistics, the German firm was “motivated by a desire to scale up its operations in Rotterdam”, the largest container port in Europe and the major box gateway to the German industrial heartland in the Rhine region.
“By cooperating with LBH, we’ll be able to offer the customers of both LBH Group and Rhenus Group an even more efficient and flexible range of services,” he said.
Bert Lagendijk, managing partner of LBH Group, added: “It is our goal to be able to offer our international customers a complete chain of services from the departure country to the final recipient. We’ve found a suitable partner in Rhenus to support and strengthen us in this field.”
The two companies said they would spend the next few weeks establishing the structure of the cooperation arrangement in terms of company law, and added that the deal would need to be approved by the antitrust authorities.
