The driver shortage in the UK is small change compared with the challenge facing the US road freight industry. Freightwaves has analysed the numbers produced by the American Trucking Association’s chief economist, Bob Costello, and the future looks pretty grim. The headline figure is that there could be as many as 175,000 unfilled positions by 2026, with the current shortage estimated to be about 50,000. The problem is magnified by the fact that truck productivity appears to be on the wane in the US.
