  • Investment supports the growing export industry in the northern and central regions of the country
  • At the same time, DHL is reaffirming its ongoing commitment to sustainability: GHG (Greenhouse Gas) efficiency will be increased through the use of solar panels, modern lighting and ventilation systems and charging docks for electric vehicles

Bonn/Porto, September 17, 2024: DHL Express Portugal today launched a new facility at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, Portugal. With an investment of more than EUR 25 million, DHL underlines its commitment to the Portuguese market and particularly supports the growing export industry in the northern and central regions of the country.

Covering a total area of more than 18,000 square meters, DHL Express is tripling its operational capacity at the international airport and enabling the processing of up to 6,500 packages per hour for imports. This corresponds to an increase of 150%. For exports, up to 5,000 packages per hour can be processed, which is an increase of 300%. The terminal is equipped with advanced automation systems such as X-ray scanners and automatic weighing and measuring devices, which enable fast, efficient and safe handling of shipments. The capacity expansion will enable DHL Express to manage double-digit annual volume growth, further consolidating its leading position in the logistics sector in Portugal.

In parallel with the capacity expansions, DHL is also reaffirming its commitment to sustainability. Of the more than 130 new charging ramps, 119 are intended for electric vehicles. In addition, the building is equipped with solar panels and with advanced lighting and ventilation systems, confirming the company’s commitment to increasing the CO2 efficiency of its transport and storage activities.

“Portugal has been one of the countries with the strongest economic growth in Europe in recent years, supported by healthy demand for Portuguese exports. DHL Express is fully committed to supporting the country’s continued trade development in the long term,” said Mike Parra, CEO of DHL Express Europe. “As usual, we are combining our investments in capacity with new technologies that improve efficiency and reliability as well as support sustainability. We expect this to significantly increase the competitiveness of our customers in Portugal in their export and import activities.”

“The inauguration of this new terminal at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto is an important milestone for DHL in Portugal. It is a renewed commitment to innovation, sustainability and economic growth in the north of Portugal,” said José Reis, CEO of DHL Express Portugal. “We are proud to contribute to the development of this region and to support the small and medium-sized enterprises that form the basis of our economy. With this investment, we are ready to continue to ‘connect people and improve lives’ while raising the standards for efficiency and sustainability in the logistics industry.”

In addition to DHL Express executives, the Mayor of Maia, António Tiago, and the German Ambassador to Portugal, Julia Monar, also attended the inauguration ceremony.
