Here’s one from the left field: Saudi Arabia is reportedly drawing up plans to develop an enormous canal through Oman which would negate the need for vessels calling further up the Persian/Arabian Gulf to transit the Gulf of Hormuz, a chokepoint in the region which Iranian naval forces could potentially shut off – effectively blockading vessels from reaching Saudi port gateways and thus limiting Saudi oil exports. It really would be an extraordinary engineering feat if it ever materialises.
