Much of thinking behind Asia manufacturing sourcing locations over the past three years or so has been the leakage of manufacturing out of China to lower-cost locations such as Cambodia, Vietnam and Bangladesh. However, new prime minister Narendra Modi is intent on seeing some of that business come to India, paving the way for much deeper economic ties between the world’s two most populous countries. “Modi’s goal is to bring basic manufacturing to an economy that needs more decent-paying jobs. In short, China has set its sights on rivalling Germany or Japan, while India will happily settle for where China is now.”
