Demand between Asia and North America has confounded the severe downturn predictions, despite the US still being in the grip of Covid-19.

Container spot rates to the US west coast are running at record levels and are more than double the level of a year ago, being tipped to break through the $4,000 per feu mark by the end of the month.

Transpacific carriers have reinstated capacity to pre-virus levels and are adding extra loaders in order to ease the backlog of bookings and of course maximise their earnings.

Here MSC announces its new Santana loop which The Loadstar understands is outside of its 2M network agreement with Maersk. The carrier says it is being launched “in anticipation of continuous strong market demand” and it “will remain in place until further notice”
