Maersk is teaming up with industry peers and customers in its quest to find a zero-carbon fuel to power its vessels to be built by 2030.
So far alcohol, biomethane and ammonia have been identified as the best positioned fuels to reach that ‘holy grail’. Maersk, together with shipping line Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Copenhagen University and customers BMW, H&M, Levi Strauss and Marks & Spencer, have formed the LEO Coalition working group, which is currently laboratory testing the environmental and commercial viability of LEO fuel – a blend of lignin (a structural bio-polymer) and ethanol.
