Safety is one area where collaboration between competitors is key. The liner’s Cargo Incident Notification System is a good case in point. Created by five of the major shipping lines, and joined by another five, it logs incidents and problems – and as a result has come up with some useful and informative stats. One third of incidents, for instance, arose from cargo loaded in Europe and North America, while two thirds of the substances involved are dangerous goods – one fifth of which are misdeclared. In fact, 21% of all cases involved misdeclared cargo. An interesting read for anyone who wants to improve safety at sea – and on land.
