The on-off Hanjin-sponsored container terminal at the US east coast port of Jacksonville is finally off, after the port authority released the Korean carrier from its commitment to build the facility, in return for inauguration of a CKYH service to the port. Although it signed a deal with the port authority several years ago to build a semi-automated terminal at the Florida port several years ago, stagnating volumes as a result of the recession put the project into abeyance. It has now been filed in the bin – and deals a blow to Jaxport’s aspirations to compete with Savannah and Charleston for US hinterland traffic.
