India is crying out for more container terminal capacity. In particular, there is a pressing need for deepsea capacity, and yet one obvious project at the port of Ennore, on the outskirts of Chennai, where a huge tranche of land has been awaiting development for more than a decade, has just fallen through after the Spanish-led consortium was unable to arrange debt terms. A shame, as the 16-metre draught terminal would likely have put the country onto the deepsea Asia-Europe trades.
