While Australian farmers struggle with cattle prices at four-year lows due to record slaughter rates, abattoirs are earning high margins by selling onto Asian markets in high demand for beef.

Australia’s agricultural department announced that shipments in the first half of 2013/14 climbed 18% to 688,755. In the long term, however, the current drought could spell beef shortages and provide fewer cattle for slaughterhouses.
