
Maybe we’re missing something here. But the US government shutdown, which imperils wages and federal institutions, is nothing short of astonishing. A political system (which, incidentally, the US rather likes to promote internationally) which allows parties to use government debt as a bargaining tool, rather than debate on policy, seems hugely flawed. Something feels less than democratic here.
