No, it’s not an April fool. 3D printing is becoming a closer reality for complex items – such as cars. This article reports on the makings of a three-wheel, two passenger vehicle which will take some 2,500 hours of printing to complete, and be lighter and more environmentally friendly. The prototype cost? $50,000.

They’ll have to reduce the cost of printer cartridges first before this has a chance of success.

February 28, 2013 at 11:45 pmI’m not sure I would or could wait for 100+ days to get my new car. And, in addition to lower cost printer cartridges, will low toner messages and changing empty cartridges slow the process even more? Still, the fact that there is a prototype should continue to motivate people to find the solutions needed to commercialize the process. What is the impact when you don’t have to transport products through a supply chain?
