It could be said that there is a certain irony in Air France’s unions warning that the airline is at risk of going under without investment in fleet and people, while attempting to block a strategy to cut jobs. With every legacy European airline wondering how to compete with the Middle Eastern carriers, which have low labour costs among other competitive advantages, it is no wonder that managers are trying to reduce costs of all kinds. Although it could also be argued that the unions are right to some extent – clearly, the strategies implemented so far have not been a roaring success.
