Retailers in the west were caught out by the sudden drop in demand during the last recession, as historical-based demand forecasts showed their vulnerabilities and inventory sizes mushroomed. How about trying demand-sensing, as exemplified by Coca Cola’s Freestyle machine, compared with traditional vending machines? It reminds The Loadstar of Walmart’s predictive technology, which allegedly employs a computer more powerful than the Pentagon’s.
