Shortly after senior Taiwanese shipping line executives denounced suggestions that its two main shipping lines, Yang Ming and Evergreen, might merge, it now appears that Taiwan’s ministry of transportation and communications is considering merging the former with state-owned port operator Taiwan International Port Corp. One reason is that the government continues to hold a 33% stake in Yang Ming – while Evergreen is privately owned – making a merger with the port company a far easier process to manage.
