The long-held dream of introducing shortsea shipping to the US has once again been reenergised. In Virginia the port is working with a barge operator to run a service between the deepwater container terminals at Hampton Roads and Richmond. It has required government support, and the hope is now that shippers will be attracted to it and make it commercially viable. If it fails it would not be the first time, however. The country has proved to be stubbornly resistant to the concept so far.
