The port of Hamburg is understandably trumpeting its “outstandingly good result” in the first quarter of the year after increasing its container traffic by 8%, quarter-on-quarter, handling 2.4m teu.

Indeed, it is an admirable performance by the German hub port, considering the chronic congestion at the turn of the year after weeks of adverse weather delayed ship arrivals, combined with the upgrading of several ultra-large containerships (ULCs) on Asia-Europe services.
