Consumers may celebrate the fact that the new iPad Air is 30% lighter than the iPad 4, which in itself was 10% lighter than the original iPad, but it has certainly put pressure on the airfreight industry. As a result, EVA Airways, Taiwan’s cargo stalwart, is to cut its freighter fleet by a third, in a bid to match the volume cuts of its biggest customers, the hi-tech market. “Apple not only changed consumers’ pattern, but also changed air cargo transportation,” said EVA president Austin Cheng. “Electronic products are becoming smaller, while we charge by weight. The whole pattern for cargo transportation has changed.”
