DSV is to take advantage of Panalpina’s aircraft capacity to operate to China as supply chains begin to work again.

Other operators, however, such as Cargologicair, appear to have suspended services globally.

DSV said that there was some 5,000 tons less capacity available each day as airlines cut flights to China. As a result, it will operate Panalpina’s 747-8F from tomorrow, three times a week east and westbound between Huntsville and Shanghai.

“Determined to assist our customers in tackling some of the resulting backlogs and offset supply chain disruptions, DSV offers a unique solution via our charter network,” it said.

“The solution ensures that DSV will be fully in control of the capacity available on this charter solution. Taking advantage of the Huntsville hub and spoke model, we can connect all continents via our DSV controlled charter network and ensure DSV ground handling at uncongested airports.

“In Huntsville, express connections are available to and from Latin American countries and Canada.”

Freighter operators are expected to see rates soar as shippers rush to get their goods out of China following the re-launch of production. A significant amount of belly capacity will not return to China until April, giving freighter operators the upper hand in relieving the congestion.

However, some operators appear to be struggling. UK operator Cargologicair has not flown its freighters for more than two weeks. One landed in Dubai on 9 February, and the other is in Leipzig, where it flew on 3 February. One source suggested it was having problems with its AOC, but the UK Civil Aviation Authority told The Loadstar last week its AOC had not been suspended.

The carrier has not yet responded to The Loadstar.

In Miami, Sky Lease Cargo has retired its MD-11 freighters, according to CH Aviation. Flight tracking shows that one has not flown in nine months, and the other in a month. The carrier’s two 747Fs continue to operate.
