You don’t hear much about Argentina. And, having read this article, now we know why. In a bizarre – and many would say misguided – attempt to boost the economy, the government has insisted that importers must also export. Which is why Mitsubishi is exporting peanuts, Subaru has opted for chicken feed, Porsche is now an olive and Malbec exporter. Those that don’t play the game find their imports – which could be parts, farm machinery, medicines – forever consigned to Customs at a foreign port. A long and thoroughly fascinating article about a country playing to different economic rules, and not very successfully.
