State subsidies for airlines are beginning to trickle in – AF-KLM the latest to receive a bailout, of some €10bn in loans and guarantees. But there are likely to be many arguments ahead. Green groups want environmental conditions on bailouts and some airlines (like Ryanair) argue that any support schemes should be open to all airlines and be proportionate to each firm’s share of traffic. It has threatened legal action if the EU allows bailouts that “selectively gift billions of euros to inefficient flag-carriers”, Euractiv reports.
